Mike Flanagan has a great horror recommendation ahead of Halloween

Mike Flanagan, the mastermind behind some of Netflix’s best horror series –Fall of the House of Usher, Midnight massAnd The Ghost of Hill House– has a serious love affair with Stephen King adaptations. He didn’t just direct the sequel The radiant, Doctor sleepbut he also exploded on Netflix with his hit Gerard’s gameanother King-based thriller.

Flanagan, who is now redeveloping Blumhouse’s Exorcist franchise after David Gordon Green’s reboot faltered at the box office, keeps the Stephen King train rolling with an eight-episode series adaptation of Carrie for Amazon. According to Deadline, he is even in talks with King about a new attack The Dark Tower.

But the Carrie news is really just a gateway to recommending another horror gem: Odditycurrently streaming on AMC+/Shudder or available for rental. This film, written and directed by Damian McCarthy, caught Flanagan’s attention, and he took to his Letterboxd account to rave about it:

“Absolutely excellent. Damian McCarthy’s riveting, terrifying follow-up to his atmospheric and chilling film CAVEAT is a masterclass in fear, atmosphere and tension.

“A gripping opening scene in which a woman opens the door to a disturbing stranger evolves into a story of supernatural revenge, mournful ghosts and hidden secrets.”

Flanagan’s praise is in line with the general consensus:Oddity has a score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes – and our very own critic Jason Adams on Pajiba agrees:

“McCarthy draws out all these plots to wonderfully excruciating lengths, pushing us towards all hell breaking loose by turning it into a shell game – by the final act we don’t know where to look to be afraid, because the fear comes from could come from a dozen different places. The film teaches us to peer into the many unfathomable darknesses in search of its monster, grimly unsure which monstrous face suddenly looks back. It is not played enough and it is a beautiful example of deception.’

So, if you’re looking for the perfect spooky seasonal watch and have already caught it Smile 2 in theaters, give Oddity past. It comes with the Mike Flanagan seal of approval.
