Aishwarya replied, “The Miss Worlds we have had so far have been proof enough that they have had compassion. Compassion for the underprivileged and not just for the people who have status and stature. We have had people who can see beyond the barriers that man has erected – of nationalities and skin color. We have to look further and that would make a real Miss World a real person.

About Indian culture

During the 1994 competition, Aishwarya Rai had spoken about her Indian roots in the introductory video and highlighted the different cultures and races that coexist in the country: “We have the world in India. It is more cosmopolitan because (there are) so many religions in India, so many races. It is an amalgamation of so many cultures and people have learned to live together in it,” she said.

She added: “This experience (Miss World 1994) was incredible. I know I’ll look back and think it’s so strange that so many of us come from different countries, that we’ve never met, and that we’re here and we spent a month together. We really made such good friends. But then again, I don’t know when we’ll meet again in life.”
