‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Jessica Capshaw Responds to Writer Faking Cancer

Long time ago Grey’s anatomy regular Jessica Capshaw never suspected that one of the show’s former writers, Elizabeth R. Finch, was lying about her cancer. But she was.

“It never occurred to me not to believe her,” Capshaw said on Sunday’s edition of her podcast, iHeartRadio’s Call it what it iswhich she co-hosts with Camilla Luddington, who continues to star on ABC’s long-running hit medical drama. “You could never in a million years question the things she lied about.”

The women tackled the topic of lies in an episode titled “Call it Liars.” It was their response to Peacock’s three-part documentary about Finch, which premiered on October 15. Anatomy of lies delved into Finch’s fabrications and how she got away with them for the better part of a decade.

After reports exposed her lies, Finch resigned while she was under investigation at Disney.

“It’s so hard to explain,” said Capshaw, who left the show in 2018 but appeared in 2020 as Dr. Arizona Robbins. “Of course I was surprised that she wasn’t who she really said she was, and she didn’t report experiences that were actually her own, but I wasn’t surprised that someone could do that. And I was just like: Oh, well, she was really good at that, because I believed her.

Capshaw said she and Finch had “a very, very long talk” outside her trailer as she left the cast, “because she was so sad that I was leaving and wanted to talk about it.”

Now she wonders if Finch was sad at all.

Meanwhile, Luddington, who is Dr. Josephine “Jo” Wilson continues to play Graysaid she didn’t want to talk about her time on set with Finch, but had to share one personal story that she has kept to herself until now.

“What I really hate about this is you go back and question all the different things,” Luddington said. “And this person. I remember going to Hawaii for the first time, and I was so excited that I could afford to go to Hawaii. I’ve never been able to afford something so tropical and glamorous. And I told everyone that I was going to Kauai, and I was very excited. And of course I went with my boyfriend, who is now my husband.’

Strangely enough, Finch showed up during her vacation.

“I think it was about three days after that trip and (Finch) was sitting at the bar at the hotel. The hotel I was at in Kauai, she was sitting at the bar three days after my trip. Yeah, she was with someone else , and I remember thinking it was the most random coincidence.

Luddington said she told “so many” people where she was going.

“I’m sure I would have told her,” she noted.

After the premiere of Anatomy of liesFinch released a statement: “The truth is there is no excuse, no justification – nothing will ever make my lies to anyone okay. Nothing erases the trauma I caused – the fear, the pain, the anger, the tears, the time And nothing is more important to me than holding myself accountable in every way possible. I will continue to repair the damage I may have and make sure I am not the worst things I have done Recognize that it will take time for people to believe this. I will work and wait as long as it takes.”
