We’ll be treated to a pivotal NBA Cup matchup on Friday when the Los Angeles Clippers visit the Minnesota Timberwolves with a spot in the Knockout Round potentially on the line.

Minnesota will need a win – and a significant one – to improve to 2-2 in Cup play and get the points differential into a good place, while LA hopes to move to 2-1 in what will mark Norman Powell’s return to the setup should be.

My analysis
Norman Powell’s impact cannot be underestimated. He led the Los Angeles Clippers in scoring, and he has paced this team offensively by about eight points per 100 possessions.

We expect Powell back in this game, and even if he plays 20-25 minutes as LA returns him to action, his return should be more than enough to put the Clippers in prime position against the struggling Minnesota Timberwolves.

Minnesota’s otherworldly offense simply hasn’t been the same since Julius Randle was brought in in a trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to New York, where he finished just 13th in efficiency. It currently sits right in the middle of the league in three-point shooting despite taking a ton of shots from deep, and that should make things very difficult as the Clippers rank fifth in defending the three.

The Timberwolves will also have to contend with this defensively, as the Clippers have been one of the best teams in mid-major, an area they defended one of the worst in the league.

Minnesota certainly needs a win at some point, riding a four-game losing streak, but we can’t look past some of the problems piling up for this team – especially late in games. The offense hasn’t scored when it needs to, and this Clippers team has played on edge over the last two weeks and should have the tools to compete during this stretch.

With a sizeable edge on the glass and the ability to score from the midrange and shut down Minnesota’s perimeter attack, I feel comfortable taking the points in what could be another statement win for the surging Clippers .

I alluded to the Clippers’ edge on the glass above, but let’s explain just how big this one is. Minnesota ranks 19th with a rebound percentage of 49.3%, while LA ranks third in the NBA, and the Timberwolves have had a particularly difficult time keeping opponents on the glass with more than 15 rebounds allowed per game.

James Harden has had a great year in this department, averaging over seven boards per game, and has managed six or more in nine of his last eleven games. Additionally, he has seen an increase in rebound rate with Powell on the floor, so in a soft matchup he should be able to capitalize on this leg for us.

I’m also going to endorse one of the most prevalent mid-range shooters in the NBA, and one of the leaders of this team, by teaming up with Derrick Jones Jr. score nine or more points. He should get some bad defense from Randle here and with Powell on the floor to take some of the focus away, I’m confident he’ll reach that number for the fourth time in five games.
