A Florence man hit and killed by a vehicle in Magee

MAGEE, Miss. (WLBT) – A Florence man was killed after a vehicle struck him in Magee. It happened Friday evening on Highway 49 South.

Before the collision, the Simpson County 911 Emergency Center received a call about a man, Douglas Lee Huffman, 36, walking in the middle of the highway.

The call was then forwarded to provincial authorities before being sent to city officials.

While officers were on the road, they were told Huffman was sitting in the middle of the roadway, making it difficult for drivers to see him.

Shortly afterwards he was hit by a car.

Authorities say the driver of the vehicle thought he had hit a deer and continued to the turnaround, where he waited for officers to arrive.

Investigation showed that the driver was not under the influence of any substances and that there was no foul play.

“This was unfortunately a tragic accident,” Magee police said in a Facebook post. “This is a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved, and our thoughts and prayers are with both Mr. Huffman’s family and the driver during this difficult time.”
